Statham in a Cardigan? Shelter (2026) is the Same Old Song and Dance

I’ve reached a point where I can set my watch by a Jason Statham movie. You know the drill. He’s a “retired” guy with a specific set of skills that usually involve breaking femurs with household objects. He lives in a spot where the Wi-Fi is terrible. Eventually, a group of suit-wearing goons ruins his Sunday.

In this Shelter (2026) review, I’m asking one question: does the formula still work?

Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, the film puts Michael Mason (Statham) on a remote Scottish island. It’s the kind of place where you’d expect a quiet life, right? Wrong. A delivery girl named Jesse (Bodhi Rae Breathnach) gets stuck there during a nasty storm. Then, like clockwork, the ghosts of Mason’s past show up with guns. It’s basically Home Alone but with more neck-snapping and a higher body count.

Why the Shelter (2026) Review Scores are Mixed

Honestly, the consensus is going to be split right down the middle. On one hand, Statham is incredibly good at what he does. The man can make a cardigan look intimidating. Waugh handles the action with a steady hand, and the fight choreography doesn’t feel like a shaky-cam mess.

But here’s the rub. The script by Ward Parry is just… stiff.

Action vs. Emotion: The Statham Dilemma

Mason is supposed to be protecting a traumatized kid, but he talks like he’s reading off a tactical manual. There’s a massive lack of actual human warmth here. It’s all “secure the perimeter” and very little “are you okay?” This makes the emotional stakes feel about as heavy as a wet paper towel.

The film also tries to weave in some sub-Bourne government conspiracy nonsense. We get lots of scary code names. We get serious people looking at monitors in dark rooms. It’s filler. It robs screentime from talented actors like Daniel Mays and Naomi Ackie, who are basically just there to fill out the background.

If you just want to see the Stath do his thing in the Scottish rain, you’ll have a decent time. Just don’t expect it to stick in your brain for longer than the drive home. My final Shelter (2026) review? It’s a recycled formula that could have used a lot more soul and a lot less “agent of the state” posturing. It’s fine, but we’ve seen it before.
