Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones) and Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody) are reportedly being considered to play Lara Croft in Prime Video’s upcoming Tomb Raider reboot. The project is being produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge as part of her £15m annual deal with Amazon.
This news comes after previous Lara Croft actress Alicia Vikander expressed disappointment about not returning to the role. Vikander, who starred in the 2018 film adaptation, had been set for a sequel before MGM lost the rights to the franchise. Despite the film’s modest box office performance (£228m globally), Vikander’s performance was widely praised.
While Emma Corrin and Mackenzie Davis were initially on the producers’ wish list, they will not be screen testing for the role.
The series marks a significant project for Waller-Bridge since signing her Amazon deal in 2019. Though she departed from Donald Glover’s Mr and Mrs Smith series due to creative differences (which went on to become successful with Maya Erskine in her place), Amazon Studios remains supportive of Waller-Bridge. Vernon Sanders, Amazon’s head of television, recently defended her contract, stating she is “very committed” to the Tomb Raider project.
For context, the Tomb Raider franchise previously saw Angelina Jolie in the role during the early 2000s before Vikander’s 2018 reboot.
